I grew up in Kwazulu Natal but I'm now based in Cape Town. I studied journalism at Rhodes university, because I had always imagined myself as 'a writer'. Or at least somebody who could tell great stories. I first picked up a camera when I was 13. It was a Nikon, my dads. A film camera. I shot everything. My morning bowl of cornflakes. I wasted reams and reams of film on shooting everyday objects and lost dozens more with my amateur darkroom skills. My friend Margot was my first model. Confident, crazy, young, beautiful. We were a great team.
I never planned to be a professional photographer, even though my teenage ambitions to work for National Geographic were often confided in friends. My photographic approach reflects the way I see and experience the world. Real, exciting, authentic, edgy, sexy, beautiful. I believe in feeling my way through images and through ideas. I draw a lot of inspiration from other photographers and film directors, but also through images, converstaions, emotions and ideas that are flowing around me. I like to think that through my work and my ideas I'm pushing something new, something different, something no other photographer is doing or thinking.
